Sea level rise is accelerating. According to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-led report recently released, the United States is expected to experience as much sea level rise by the year 2050 as it witnessed in the previous hundred years, an additional 10 to 12 inches. The Sea Level Rise Technical Report contains projections to help decisionmakers plan for the future. Coastal flooding is expected to occur 10 times more often than it does today, even in the absence of storms or heavy rainfall. The release of the report was accompanied by an interactive tool that allows one to see potential impacts on their own neighborhoods.
