POSTPONED: Board of Appeals to Consider Pier Extension

We will update when more information becomes available.

The Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing on a request to extend a pier on the Corsica River from the 150 feet allowed by regulation to 314 feet. CRC will oppose. The public is welcome to attend and speak.

The pier will cross into the bounds of an established and state protected oyster sanctuary (Emory’s Wharf Sanctuary) and it will shade areas of the river where submerged aquatic grass beds existed historically. Oyster reefs and grass beds are critical to improving river health.

The establishment of a pier more than twice the permissible length for the purpose of docking large boats also impacts navigation of the river for those recreating in small crafts near shore such as kayaks, canoes, and small sailing and motor boats.

Approving this request will reinforce a concerning precedent that undermines County regulations for pier length moving forward.

The hearing will be held on Wednesday, November 15th at 5 pm at the Planning Department, 110 Vincit Street, Centreville, MD
