National Take Back Drug Day is April 27th this year. When improperly disposed of, either in the trash or down the drain, prescription and over-the-counter drugs can make their way into our waterways with negative effects on water quality and aquatic life. Conventional wastewater treatments are not well positioned to screen out pharmaceuticals and leaching from landfills can seep into groundwaters. The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Department at 505 Railroad Avenue in Centreville and the Maryland State Police Barracks on Rt 301 just north of Rt 304 will be collecting unwanted drugs from 10 am until 2 pm. The Sherriff’s Department will accept liquid and pills from both prescriptions and over the counter medications. They do not have to be in original packaging. The State Police will not accept liquids. Neither will accept sharps.
